Valentine's Day, as we know it today, is much more than just a date on the calendar. It is a tradition that dates back centuries, filled with love, mystery and, of course, roses.
The Legend of Saint Valentine
The history of Valentine's Day is shrouded in ancient legends, one of the most widespread being the legend of Saint Valentine. It is said that during the reign of Emperor Claudius II in the 3rd century, Saint Valentine defied the emperor's orders to ban marriages, believing that love was essential to life. He continued to perform marriages in secret, but was eventually captured, tried and sentenced to death on February 14th.
While in prison, Saint Valentine allegedly sent the first "love letter" by sending a message of affection to the guard's daughter, signed "From your Valentine." This story contributed to the tradition of exchanging love letters on Valentine's Day.
The Evolution of Valentine's Day
Over the centuries, Valentine’s Day evolved into what we know today as Valentine’s Day. The exchange of cards, flowers, and gifts became a common expression of love and appreciation. The tradition of red roses, a symbol of passion and romance, became especially prominent, thanks to their eternal link with love.
